Automated Filament Dry Box

A smart filament storage system with ESP32-powered humidity monitoring and automatic desiccant regeneration.

storageESP32IoT

Overview

Moisture is the enemy of good 3D prints. This project combines a sealed storage container with active humidity monitoring and automated desiccant regeneration to keep filament bone dry.

Features

  • ESP32 microcontroller reading Si7021 temperature/humidity sensor
  • OLED display showing real-time conditions per spool slot
  • Automatic heating cycle when humidity exceeds threshold
  • Web dashboard for remote monitoring via ESPHome
  • 4-spool capacity with PTFE feed tubes

Results

After a month of testing, the system maintains consistent 15-20% relative humidity inside the box. Hygroscopic filaments like Nylon and TPU show dramatically improved print quality when stored in this system compared to open-air storage.
